"Democracy Is Not a Business": Bringing Progressive Voice to RNC, CODEPINK Disrupts Romney Speech

Code_pink_-_rnc_2012-3

As Mitt Romney formally accepted the Republican presidential nomination Thursday night, four activists from the group CODEPINK interrupted him throughout, calling for money out of politics and a return to democracy. CODEPINK has been protesting every day at this week’s convention, including Wednesday night’s speech by vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan. They have also held actions against gun violence at home, military intervention abroad, and what they call the Republicans’ “war on women.” We’re joined now by two of the activists who disrupted Romney’s speech last night: Rae Abileah, co-director of CODEPINK, and Medea Benjamin, the group’s co-founder. Daughter of Billionaire GOP Donor Sheldon Adelson Pushes Democracy Now! Staff, Seizes Camera at RNC

Burke-adelson

When Democracy Now! senior producer Mike Burke attempted to interview billionaire casino magnate and Republican donor Sheldon Adelson inside the Republican National Convention, a woman identified as Adelson’s daughter grabbed our video camera, tried to take it into a private suite and then threw the camera to the ground. While Adelson’s daughter first accused Burke of hitting her, she later came out of the suite to apologize. The incident was caught on tape, shortly after Burke questioned another billionaire GOP donor, David Koch, as well as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele. Despite Focus on Convention Floor, Major Decisions at RNC Made by Wealthy Donors Behind Closed Doors

Peter_stone

As the Republican National Convention opened on Tuesday in Tampa, thousands of journalists were there to cover the story. At the same time, secretive meetings were being held behind closed doors across the city that could determine who wins the election in November. According to the Huffington Post, at one such meeting on Tuesday, the Karl Rove-founded Crossroads groups, representatives of the billionaires Charles and David Koch, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce huddled at a local hotel to coordinate efforts to spend tens of millions more on television ads and voter turnout in their effort to defeat President Obama. We speak to investigative journalist Peter Stone, whose latest article for the Huffington Post is called “RNC 2012: GOP Shadow Groups Eclipsing Party in Tampa.” [includes rush transcript]

Workers at Bain-Owned Illinois Factory Bring Fight to Save Their Outsourced Jobs to Romney and RNC

Sensatatechdemo

After repeatedly touting his business experience as an asset towards reviving the U.S. economy, Mitt Romney has been put on the defensive by Bain Capital workers who are fighting back against the outsourcing of their jobs. One hundred seventy workers at a Sensata Technologies plant in Freeport, Illinois — of which Bain is the majority owner — are calling on Romney to help save their jobs from being shipped to China. The factory manufactures sensors and controls that are used in aircraft and automobiles, but has been dismantling and shipping the plant to China piece by piece — even as it requires the workers to train personally their Chinese replacements, who have been flown in by management. We’re joined by two workers from the Sensata plant in Freeport, Illinois: Tom Gaulrapp and Cheryl Randecker. Both worked at Sensata for 33 years and were told their jobs would be terminated by the year’s end. [includes rush transcript]

Storm Cancels RNC’s First Day, But Hundreds Brave Tampa’s Wind and Rain to Protest GOP Agenda

2012-0828_vo_broll-economicmarch

As the Republican National Convention is set to resume today, we turn now to some of the voices of people who marched on the RNC Monday in Tampa, Florida. The event was billed as a demonstration that would bring thousands into the streets, but it ultimately attracted hundreds of people. Conservatives had a field day on social media noting the low turnout. Meanwhile, organizers said that they may not have gotten the numbers they wanted due in part to the threat of a massive storm — but at least they showed up. By comparison, the RNC canceled the first full day of the convention completely due to the weather. Democracy Now! spoke with some of those who braved the driving wind and rain to protest the Republican summit. [includes rush transcript]

Coporate_parties

The Republican National Convention in Tampa is officially beginning today after Monday’s session was postponed due to Tropical Storm Isaac. But the storm did not stop the partying. Dozens of events have already been held across Tampa — mostly paid for by lobbyists and corporations taking advantage of loopholes. We’re joined by Keenan Steiner, staff writer at the Sunlight Foundation, a D.C.-based organization that promotes transparency in government. To keep track of the RNC’s sponsored events and parties, the group has launched a website called “Political Party Time.” [includes rush transcript]

Despite Tropical Storm Isaac and Massive Security, Activists Plan Protest March Outside RNC in Tampa

March_on_rnc_opt1

Even as Tropical Storm Isaac bears down on the Gulf Coast, hundreds are expected to protest this morning in Tampa against the Republican National Convention. Today’s official RNC events were canceled due to the storm. But organizers from the Coalition to March on the RNC spent the night encasing their picket signs in plastic. Thousands of law enforcement officers from the local police and sheriff departments, as well as the National Guard, are patrolling the streets near the RNC in an area being called the Green Zone. We’re joined by two guests helping to organize protests in Tampa: Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK and author of the new book, “Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control,” and Tracy Molm, an activist with Students for a Democratic Society, whose mobilizing at the 2008 RNC in Minneapolis-St. Paul landed her on the FBI’s surveillance list. Agents raided Molm’s home in 2010, along with the homes of others engaged in antiwar activism critical of U.S. foreign policy. That investigation is ongoing but has not stopped her from continuing to protest. [includes rush transcript]

Left Out of the RNC, Supporters Hold Farewell Gathering for Libertarian Favorite Ron Paul

Ron_paul

While the Republican National Convention will not start until Tuesday due to Tropical Storm Isaac, supporters of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul held their own convention of sorts over the weekend. The two-day “Paul Fest” was described by some as a farewell rally for Paul, who was not invited to speak at the Republican National Convention. Over the years, key parts of Paul’s platform have included shutting down the Federal Reserve, ending U.S. wars, and slashing federal spending by eliminating agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Education. Paul has also been a vocal critic of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. We hear excerpts of speeches from Paul and his son, Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky. [includes rush transcript]
